A struggling farmer in 19th-century Denmark must go against his morals and make a deal with a wealthy neighbour in order to secure his family’s survival over a harsh winter.

Life is not easy for 11-year-old Allan living in South Jutland during the early 1970s. His mentally unstable father frequently threatens suicide and his mother has long since given up. It's up to Allan to keep the family together. When a rival family threatens his father's livelihood, Allan starts committing atrocious acts.

Hans is the name of the film's driving force and central character, an arrogant and fascinating firebrand who meddles in other people's lives with great energy.
