Takes place around Alfhild's café in a thinly populated area in Sweden.

Åke lives under oppressive conditions. The father, a painter, spends his salary on drinking with his buddies.

Arvid falls in love with Lydia but puts the budding romance on hold to pursue a career and material wealth. Lydia is willing to wait for Arvid, until her father dies, leaving her finances in a dire state.

A group of young people gathered on the countryside to celebrate midsummer dancing, drinking and romancing. And some fighting too. Followed by more violence, jealousy and guilt. On the journey home one of the cars the travel in collides with a bus.

Martin Beck and his men are assigned to the case. Soon they find a likely suspect and together with a police woman they begin a cat and mouse game to catch him.
