The story takes place in Harbiye town of Antakya just before the 1960 military coup d'etat. The economic and political crisis of those days are reflected by the both funny and sad story of a family. The story is told from the eyes of Cemal. Now a famous painter, Cemal goes back to his hometown years later and remembers his childhood. In those days Cemal's father and uncle, member of rival political parties, are in a continious struggle with each other. The film depicts this absurd struggle and the strange stories of people in Harbiye together with the lyric story of the famous waterfall of the town.

The story revolves around the beautiful Nazan, the neighbor's daughter, who manages to remain a virgin despite marrying two of the neighborhood's handsome men, Selami and Cavit; the fierce competition between Selami and Cavit for Nazan; the schemes orchestrated by Nazan's mother, Necla; and the neighbors' curious observation of these intriguing developments, their astonishment, and their simple reactions. The film is based on 'Fikrimin Ince Gulu', a novel by Adalet Agaoglu, which depicts a first generation gurbetci/guest-worker returning home. It covers his land journey in short bursts from Germany to the Turkey's west border - and extensively from thereon to his village close to Ankara - capital of Turkey. He begins his journey purchasing a second hand yellow Mercedes - possibly his first car - using his meager savings working as a laborer. Offering deep insight into the mind of a manual laborer Bayram (Ilyas Salman) making his first trip back home, resorting to flashbacks in highlighting Bayram's motivation and experiences from his childhood right up to the events leading to his first departure from Turkey to Germany.

A woman is searching for a face in photographs taken by a photographer. The face she hopes to meet one day belongs to a watch repairman, but the shop has long since closed.

The urban intellectual man is so overwhelmed that he has isolated himself. The young woman, bored in the countryside, is trying to escape to a different and bigger world. One person's place of escape is the other's place of longing. In this film, which encourages us to keep the world livable, director Olgaç says that friendship between people can only exist through love.

In the film, the struggle between the villagers and a cry is told. Villagers are in a difficult situation due to the drought in the region. Semsettin Aga and Behram Aga, the owners of the surrounding villages, keep the villagers entertained. The villagers then decide to invade the fields. Meanwhile, Mustafa was thrown in prison by shooting Behram Aga.
