Film refers to the events of the end of World War II in one of the villages in the Western Ukraine. Sergeant of the Soviet Army, Roman Karpenyuk arrives for three days on vacation in his native village to his girlfriend Anychka. However, NKVD, Ukrainian insurgent army and armed marauders stand on his way.

While investigating an ordinary homicide a group of detectives suddenly find a connection to a very first faces of USSR government.

The film tells the story of the difficult and tragic fate of a Prykarpattia family over several generations. The events take place in the difficult 30s and 40s. Meanwhile, the children have their own dramas and tragedies, because it's one thing to love someone, and another thing to know what the father thinks about it, and who he sees as wives for his sons. And then there are changes of government, and then there is the war...

In the village club of Ershovka, a trial is underway against Yakov Vorobyov, who is accused of intentionally setting fire to the forest. Gradually, the trial turns into a public gathering, where the villagers openly discuss the rampant alcoholism that plagues their community.

The film takes place in pre-Christian Russia, when Ratibor united the East Slavs into one army against the nomadic Khazars.
