Lise is bored with her parents and gets a job as a waitress. She meets a sailor, Fausto, who leaves her to escape from the police. Nevertheless, she gives birth to a baby who dies shortly afterwards. Distraught, she steals a parentless child from a maternity hospital. Arrested and tried, she is acquitted, only to find Fausto innocent.

Georges Villard, a minor bank employee, is won over by Mr Steve who does him favours, treats him to the high life and introduces him to his wife Florence, with whom he falls in love. Georges is unaware that these generous gifts will cost him dearly.

Penelope Benson, known as Penny, is both romantic and determined. Put in a select boarding school by her mother, she takes advantage of a trip to Paris to get away from it all and live her own life. The cruel and abusive headmaster of a boarding school, Michel Delassalle, is murdered by an unlikely duo -- his meek wife and the mistress he brazenly flaunts. The women become increasingly unhinged by a series of odd occurrences after Delassalle's corpse mysteriously disappears.

Dominique is a pretty, vivacious girl. When she witnesses a car theft, she throws herself and her bicycle under the vehicle. Jacques Mareuil, whom she then blackmails, pays her a sum to cover her debts. In reality, Mareuil, a policeman, is keeping an eye on Atcheminov, the owner of the car, but, wanting to prove that he is an unscrupulous trafficker, he comes up against Dominique's impetuosity time and again. It all ends up like in a good comedy.

Witty narration follows the history of Versailles Palace; founded by Louis XIII, enlarged by autocratic Louis XIV, whose personal affairs and amours, and those of his two successors, are followed in more detail to the start of the Revolution, after which the story is brought rapidly up to date. A huge cast plays mainly historical persons who appear briefly.
