During the Third Reich, Macke played the drums for the Hitler Youth, but also had a "dangerous" penchant for jazz. After the war, he came under ideological fire in the Soviet zone. Finally in West Germany, he ends up in an institution.

Together with her uncle and waiter Otto, young Renate runs a guesthouse high above the Rhine, which hardly any guests ever visit. When she suddenly inherits a vineyard in Tuscany one day, the three of them set off full of hope on the arduous journey south. Friedl Meier, owner of a country hotel, inherits a large sum of money in dollars – but the problem is that the inheritance certificate is issued in the name Meyer with a “y,” the surname of Friedl's former fiancé Ferdinand, who later made a career for himself in the USA. As luck would have it, Ferdinand is spending his vacation at a nearby hotel – together with his butler Leo, who causes some confusion in the affair.

His grandpa gives the orphan boy Robbie a foal that they call "little brother". The boy loves the animal and wants to train it as a racing horse - but then his grandpa dies. Robbie's sister isn't old enough to care for themselves, so they get a guardian who decides to sell all the horses.
