In 2020, the world is forced into lockdown by the COVID pandemic. As remote work is popularized in order to keep the infection rate under control, a young man employed by a company in Tokyo moves to a country town on the Sanriku Coast in Miyagi Prefecture, where he could enjoy fishing, in search of a new lifestyle. But gradually, we found that there were problems such as "empty houses" in the local area.

One day, Hiroko accidentally starts a small fire while she is cooking. Although it does not lead to a serious incident, it does result in her going to stay with her eldest daughter, Yuko, for whom Hiroko has never been the mother she wanted.

Akiko quit being a piano teacher and has been spending her days aimlessly without setting any goals for herself. One night on New Year’s Eve, she and her younger reclusive brother Yukio are summoned by their older sister Haruko to an urgent meeting because their father is dying. They eventually end up sneaking into the family home in the middle of the night to steal the safe.
