Tatjana is a tale of Russia, the Bolshevik uprising and revolution in a rural setting, entwined with a story of desire and deception. The first intertitle reads, “Fate tires now and then of painting pretty coloured pictures. In such a mood she takes the Blacks and Reds of Human Passion and paints a stark tragedy…” The scene opens on a manservant, drawing back the curtains and discovering his master slumped over at his desk. He is dead. The Chief of Police arrives to interrogate the household and discovers the dead man’s wife purposely sent all the servants out to the theatre the night before… what was the reason for her actions? A letter will explain all as the film delves into the characters’ past through flashback…

19-year-old Melitta von Windheim is profoundly fascinated by the famous actor Ludvig Romay. That’s why she can hardly believe her own good fortune, as it turns out that her cousin Rudolf is an old friend of Romay and wants to introduce them. Romay and Melitta hit it off straight away, and before poor Rudolf can look twice, the woman he’s in love with is married off to someone else. Over the years, the marriage crumbles, and a tragic accident hits Melitta so hard that she has to leave for warmer climes. When her husband, an aspiring poet, gets his theatrical script rejected, Agnes Holck decides to take matters into her own hands. With the script in hand, she seeks out theatre director Viggo Reyner who takes an interest – not in the play, but in Agnes herself! However, his former favourite actress Lily Werner, doesn’t like being ignored. FRAGMENT | An apparition appears when the threat of foreclosure looms over the family estate. Solicitor Bang is a rich man with financial power over a dowager baroness and her estate. However, Bang also wants power over the baroness’ daughter Lucy, whose heart belongs to the family doctor Sperling. Bang threatens to foreclose the estate if Lucy doesn’t marry him. Count von Pfalz is engaged to countess Linda, but her affections belong to the famous actor Kurt Barner. When von Pfalz sees Linda give Barner an amulet containing her portrait, his fears are confirmed, and he breaks off the engagement. Linda is relieved, but her parents are dismayed at the prospect of having a dissolute artist as a son-in-law. Linda’s mother approaches Barner in tears and asks him to end the relationship with her daughter. Crumpling at the sight of these maternal tears, Barner comes up with a plan to push Linda away.
