Comedy writer Ippei Sekiya decides to end his life one day, contemplating suicide by jumping in front of a train during his return home from work. Just as he is about to jump, a person is hit by a train at the previous station, which makes him reconsider. In tribute to Tomohiro, the man who died instead of him, Ippei sneaks into his funeral. Upon returning home, he is confronted by his ghost. Grateful that Ippei continues to live because of his death, Tomohiro makes an astonishing request.

Aspiring celebrity Yahiro Kuwata moves to Tokyo and becomes a "Cursed Property Resident Talent," living in haunted locations for TV and social media. As he hops between eerie apartments, an old inn, and a séance-filled share house, he uncovers the dark mysteries hidden within. A corpse of a clown is found in a park. Detective Shirataka Amane of Musashino Higashi Police Station begins investigating with rookie detective Uzuka Shinsaku. They find a picture of the victim holding a balloon with the number 1 and the letters TTX on social media which indicates pufferfish poisoning. Shirataka intuitively suspects that this is an incriminating statement done by a serial killer, but Chief Investigator Fukukawa Saeko denies her. Detective Kusano Seiya and other personnel of MPD First Investigative Division join the investigation, then a second murder occurs. Shirataka recalls an unsolved kidnapping and murder case from two years ago that she still regrets.
