In 1995, a young computer specialist is working on the development of "reality-based simulation programs," which he uses to "extrapolate" the face of a criminal who kidnapped him and his sister 20 years ago and killed his sister. When he meets a young makeup artist who is searching for her missing father, it becomes clear that they are both looking for the same man.

For many years the old Waller worked as a railwayman. After Waller is informed that "his" track will be closed down and that he will be retired, he walks the route for one last time and starts to remember his life along the way: Beginning in his childhood in the 1920s, he commemorates the death of his great love as well as he recalls the legal battle with his illegitimate daughter.

The wife of a lawyer becomes the target of a violent sexual assault by two teenagers. Attempts to hold the perpetrators accountable are met with incomprehension by the village community. Prejudices on both sides turn into open hatred.

The industrialist Greskämper, who is responsible for mass redundancies, is kidnapped by terrorists. The kidnappers demand a ransom of 1 million marks. The main characters in this crime comedy based on the novel by -ky are two representatives of the 1968 generation, now disillusioned and pursuing bourgeois dreams: Benno, an unemployed political scientist, and Britta, a graduate student in education from Berlin, run Benno's grandfather's tobacconist's store in the provinces. Then they find a badly injured woman in the woods who has been attacked by a sex offender. She is one of the terrorists who kidnapped Greskämper and has 750,000 marks of the ransom money with her. The woman dies, Benno and Britta bury her and distribute 500,000 marks to the workers Greskämper has dismissed. But then the police get onto their trail. Benno is arrested and Britta makes off with the remaining money.
