Periyar joins the Indian struggle for independence after being disgusted by the injustices of the Hindu caste system. Later, he begins fighting for the rights of Tamilians.

Gopal, a man from a small town, earns a living in the city by cheating people in all possible ways. He decides to make big money by blackmailing the men involved in a woman's death. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Ganesh (Selva), a good-for-nothing youth, falls in love with Aishwarya (Monica Nerukkar). Her father Karnal Rajappa (Rajan P. Dev) is a very strict father who hates love. Ganesh and Aishwarya decide to elope but her father later has a heart attack and Aishwarya refuses to marry him. Karnal Rajappa's state of health deteriorates, therefore he arranges his daughter's wedding as soon as possible. Three terrorists (Sathya Prakash, Mahanadi Shankar and Bhanu Prakash) escape from jail. While preparing Aishwarya's wedding in Karnal Rajappa's house, Ganesh enters in her room and tries to convince her. In the meantime, the three terrorists enter in their house and begin to sequester them. These terrorists are ultimately Ganesh's friends and it was Ganesh's plan to marry his lover Aishwarya. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Amudha is intrigued by Selvaraj and he tells her his tragic past. In the past, Selvaraj lived hapilly with his wife Lakshmi (Rekha), newborn baby and his father-in-law, the judge Venugopal (V. S. Raghavan). During the deepavali festival, they all witnessed a murder committed by the rowdy Gurusami. Gurusami sent his henchmen to kill Selvaraj's family. During the confrontation, Lakshmi and Venugopal were murdered, while Selvaraj was seriously injured and his baby spared. Gurusami was later sentenced to the death penalty but he managed to be released thanks to his henchmen. Selvaraj is now determined to punish them.
