A single long-range shot shatters the quiet of a country morning, leaving a beloved doctor dead on the steps of his family home. Village policeman Gasperlmaier has a tough time in his third case. He's immediately summoned from a funeral to the bathroom of a family home. There, he finds a dead body. Together with his new superior, the investigation begins. But the first death is followed by a second. More and more pieces of the puzzle are piecing together a grim picture from the past. There's little time left for Gasperlmaier and his new boss, and it seems his mother-in-law is also involved.

The film is set in the near future, in a world of perfect capitalism. Society is sustained by a class of top achievers; meanwhile, so-called minimum recipients live under sedation in Fortresses of Sleep. The great majority of top achievers view themselves as happy. An outsourced agency has been established for the rest: Life Guidance is charged with turning these individuals into optimal people as well. Alexander has internalized the system but one wrong word to his child triggers Life Guidance. He starts to rebel and encounters the horror of the system in all its brightness and affability.

Ten episodes tell the stories of ten encounters involving a male hooker, an actor, a cleaning lady, a female theater director, a male kindergarten teacher, a poetess, a publisher, a woman, who is a lawyer, a male puppeteer and a female make-up artist. The whole circle is triggered by the off-chance meeting of the poetess and the puppeteer on an overnight bus to Vienna, where the puppeteer succeeds in persuading the poetess to stay for a day in Vienna. All the encounters take place in one day and after 24 hours they meet again, but their lives have changed.

Geologist Lena receives the news that her father Gottfried, who abandoned her eight years ago, is terminally ill. With a heavy heart, she travels back to her home village in the mountains with her young daughter. A journey into a difficult past, as Lena is not only confronted with Gottfried's rejection, but also with her former great love Anton, whom she has never been able to forget and who is now married to the enterprising and scheming Magda. But this is not the only problem: Lena discovers that her village is threatened by a landslide as a result of massive environmental destruction.
