Varga Mária

A coming-of-age story set in the contemporary Hungarian countryside, where teenage soloist Dávid decides to stand up for Nóri, 13, a cellist in their youth orchestra who is having a suspiciously close relationship with their 60-year-old conductor. While looking for the truth, Dávid's life soon starts to spiral out of control as he faces tough decisions and the adult society's negligence.

Budapest, Hungary, Christmas 1957. The state, insecure after the defeated revolution of 1956 and increasingly put under the influence of a renewed Stalinist atmosphere, has decreed that all security officials must pass an exam to verify their loyalty. But to be actually effective in a shadowy world where suspicion and secrets reign, the subjects must be unaware that they are being tested.

A young girl is taken to an orphanage, which she hopes to flee.

Hungary, 1950s. Istvánka is a sensitive little boy, longing for a role model and friendship, whose father died in the war before he was born. Before school starts, his mother takes him from the countryside to the capital. One day, he meets Lacy Márity, a 21-year-old big boy from Budakeszi, who from then on not only goes to play football with him, but also answers his most secret questions. He becomes his friend. Istvánka then becomes more tolerant of the local children's digs and the often incomprehensible behaviour of the adults. But the 1956 revolution intervenes. Laci Márity takes the lead in the rebellion.

Anyegin arrives home in an abandoned castle for his uncle's funeral. He is a misanthropic, tired, cynical man who has seen it all, tried it all and is tired of what others - including his young neighbour, Lensky - consider the meaning of his life. At Lensky's invitation, he visits the Larin's estate, where he meets Tatiana, a young girl under the spell of books and a fan. Tatiana falls in love with Anegin and confesses her feelings in a letter...

1958, Budapest. Gerencsér is a skilled worker at the abattoir, his wife left in 1956. They falls in love with the beautiful Mrs. Hász at the personnel management department, but they only date secretly because of a former relationship of Mária. They go on holiday and travel to the Mátra, just the two of them.

Shot in B&W, Gyula Gazdag's film follows the surreal and often comic quests of young Andris, an orphan searching for a father who doesn't exist, and Orban, a government clerk who's had enough of oppressive bureaucracy.
