The film can be called Andrei Tarkovsky's prayer to the Creator. The picture tells about the spiritual, religious essence of the creative ministry of the master, each film of which is a confession before the Lord and people. The basis of the film is the confessional diaries of Andrei Tarkovsky and Nikolai Burlyaev, who played the main roles in the films Ivan's Childhood and Andrei Rublev.

In the center of the plot is the Vatican list of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the main Orthodox shrine of Kazan. The film describes four layers of Russian history: the liberation of Moscow by the militia of Minin and Pozharsky, the battle of Poltava, the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Great Patriotic War. During all these events, the Orthodox inhabitants of Tatarstan turned to their protector, the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, for help. It is believed that the icon was carried away in 1611 by the Kazan militia and later helped Minin and Pozharsky liberate Moscow from the Poles.

Andrei Tarkovsky is the most famous Russian director, often called a genius during his lifetime. He made relatively few films, but each has become a classic of world cinema, including "Andrei Rublev," "Solaris," "Mirror," and "Stalker." His films seem to be crafted from air, water, fire, deep emotions, and even his own dreams. This art is profoundly sincere and confessional, but what about the creator behind it? What was this god-like figure like, living a mortal life filled with weaknesses, fears, and doubts?

This 2018 documentary by filmmakers Louise Milne and Seán Martin features interviews with actor Nikolai Burlyaev, cinematographer Vadim Yusov, Tarkovsky personal assistant Olga Surkova, film critic Dmitri Salynsky, and Tarkovsky scholar Vida T. Johnson.
