A man is fired from his office job and at the same time he has a suspicion that his wife is cheating on him. The movie follows the desperate and dramatic reactions that the man makes up in his mind.

In this film, Norwegian writer, director, cameraman and musician Ragnar Lasse has fashioned an intricate, exquisitely photographed and multilayered examination of the lives, problems and relationships of a father and this two children, a boy and a girl. The story ranges over a wide time period and is covered in multiple flashbacks and from a number of different points of view.

A portrayal of two modern young men and their experiences of love. Jack, a sociology student, is in a relationship with Betty, who is somewhat older than him. It develops into a passionate love affair, but in the long run, the age difference and especially Betty's upper-class background weigh too heavily. Jack's friend, the cynical journalist Hugo, has casual relationships with several girls until he falls in love with the model Ruth. However, she returns to her husband, and when Hugo later has his face disfigured in a car accident, he ends up committing suicide. Before doing so, he tells Jack that he and several others have also had relationships with Betty.

After twelve years in the US, Kirsten returns home to her father with her American husband and their eleven-year-old son. Her father is a tough and cold businessman with whom she has never been on good terms. The couple soon separate, and Kirsten meets a former friend. Her father dies just as he is beginning to develop a good relationship with his grandson.

Thomas is newly divorced and is borrowing Bibi & Asger's apartment. He goes to the doctor because he is feeling unwell and is given some pills. At home, he gets drunk and is visited by his upstairs neighbor. At the same time, Thomas is being stalked by an unknown man on the phone. When Thomas meets Evy, he thinks they are going to have a nice evening, but she has other guests as well. After a night out on the town where Thomas gets drunk, he seeks out his divorced wife and begs her to come back.

Bound by their all-consuming desire, a young circus tightrope walker and a lieutenant forsake everything to be together and escape to the countryside—only to see their lovers’ idyll gradually give way to poverty and desperation.
