Second-hand car sales man Willenbrock has everything that he could ever wish for. He is married, has two lovers, a cottage in the German city Grünen, and a BMW. In 1942, Friedrich Weimer's boxing skills get him an appointment to a National Political Academy (NaPolA) – high schools that produce Nazi elite. Over his father's objections, Friedrich enrolls. During his year in seventh column, Friedrich encounters hazing, cruelty, death, and the Nazi code. His friendship with Albrecht, the ascetic son of the area's governor, is central to this education.

Ulli wants to surprise his partner Susanne with a very special gift: a painter to paint a portrait of her. When Markus Marberg arrives at Susanne's house, it turns out that the two of them know each other from school. However, they didn't like each other at all in the past... During the portrait sessions, which Susanne is initially reluctant to attend, they both confess that they were actually in love with each other at school. Suddenly the two are overcome by old feelings...

Alex Kerner's mother was in a coma while the Berlin wall fell. When she wakes up he must try to keep her from learning what happened (as she was an avid communist supporter) to avoid shocking her which could lead to another heart attack.
