A film about the making of a film. A director rehearses with actors and actresses some scenes from his pantomime about the death of Pierrot. The players then put on their costumes and make-up. In automobiles, all the members of the film crew are driven to a country estate where the film within the film is to be made and where the cameraman is seen turning the handle of his camera.

The wealthy De Roquevilles, the family of alcoholic veteran Jean Laurent, and that of farmer Godard; all have to deal with the outbreak of the Great War. To complicate things even more, Godard's daughter Anny falls in love with young Mario Laurent, who turns out to have inherited some of his father's vices. First part of Maurits Binger's epic silent trilogy.

Anny helps Mario escape from prison after his attempted murder of Gaston de Roqueville, who is now married to Ninette. Banker Sorga, an enemy spy, attempts to steal Mario's latest invention: a powerful explosive that could alter the course of the war. A farmer sets off to take his dairy products to market, leaving his wife and daughter alone. During the day, a vagrant seeks shelter in the house. Not daring to refuse, the farmer's wife tells him he can go to the attic to sleep until he is rested. In the attic, he discovers rat poison, a powder that looks like salt. He waits until the hostess is out of the way, sneaks down the stairs, and sprinkles the poison into a stew on the stove. Unbeknownst to him, the farmer's young daughter sees what he is doing.

The storyline is about a man without a head that haunts the castle Arco in the 16th century. A man in the present day (1914) goes to the castle to find out if the story is true after which he finds something strange beneath the old castle floor.

Silvia grows up in miserable circumstances. Her father is an incurable drunk who neglects his family. His first daughter was stillborn, the second died at a young age, and the third was only eighteen when she went mad and died.

Evert has found the girl of his dreams in Roze Kate, much to the jealousy of his brothers Jacob and Simon. Then something completely unexpected happens when their father dies. If their mother remarries, she can ensure that her sons will lose their father's inheritance, prompting Jacob and Simon to hatch a plan to murder their mother. When it happens, all the evidence points to Evert, who was not involved in the plot. It seems that Roze Kate is playing a cunning game to deprive the boys of their inheritance.
