Empathy is a two-edged sword, especially for Martin. Tormented by the past, haunted by the present, the chief inspector is a brilliant investigator and, together with his team, solves the most convoluted cases. From kidnapping to hostage situations, to murder. Unable to eat or sleep until a case is solved, they all take their toll.

On a freezing cold winter day, several guests visit their relatives in an old people's home in the Frankfurt area. When the weather changes shortly afterwards and black ice falls over the area, the guests unexpectedly get stuck.

A kidnapping case starts a dangerous game of cat and mouse for Berlin detective Martin Brühl in the world of illegal car racing. 19-year-old Tim Jatzkowski doesn't come home. At first this is nothing to worry about. But then his father, luxury car dealer Heiner Jatzkowski, receives a ransom demand. Martin Brühl and his team encounter a shocked mother and a rather shirt-sleeved father who thinks the police should do their job and find Tim. The detective tries to convince Jatzkowski to pay the ransom. Among Jatzkowski's regular customers, whom he supplies with tuned luxury sports cars, there are plenty with contacts to the Berlin clans. He decides against paying the ransom.

Soaked to the skin, Costantino sinks into the haystack like old timber left on the shore by a stormy sea. Torrential rain has just put out the fire that in a single night ravaged Assandira, a farmstay deep in the woods of Sardinia. But the rain hasn't quenched the pain, the endless remorse for the son lost to the flames, the son he was unable to save. The first to arrive are the carabinieri and the young investigating magistrate: Costantino tries to tell them what happened the previous night, to explain how it all began.

Everything in architect Tom Pohlmann's life is optimized down to the last detail. He even works on his weakness, his panic fear of speaking in front of people, with the help of a psychology app - in parallel to his morning sports program. Sarah Wünsche's chaotic everyday life feels completely different: she is raising her twelve-year-old son Paul alone, working night shifts and fighting for a mini-loan to get her bankrupt kiosk back. In order for two such contrasting people to come closer together, chance has to come into play several times: first in a minor hit-and-run accident that almost lands Pohlmann in prison; and then in the children's ward at the hospital, where the notorious speeding driver is doing his community service. There he meets Sarah's son Paul, who is suffering from mysterious breathing difficulties.

Finally holidays. Tinka can hardly wait to be away from everyday life for the first time with her twelve-year-old son Paul and her dream man Jürgen. A relaxed holiday is also the right opportunity to convince Jürgen, who is not a wedding person, to take the next step in their relationship. Tinka wants to marry Jürgen, and she wants Jürgen and her son to finally understand each other better.

Ben (11) and Tariq (12) have more in common than they realise. Both are new to school and football and have lost their homeland. Ben's village will soon became an open brown coal mine. He and his family move to a nearby city but Ben fails to fit in at his new school. Bullied, he returns secretly to his old, abandoned home. His one pleasure, football, pales with the arrival of Tariq, a Syrian refugee and better player. But when bureaucracy stops Tariq playing, he runs away, Ben finds him and learns that Tariq is desperate to be reunited with his scattered family. Jealousy on the football field becomes friendship and understanding.
