Even the greatest screenwriters suffer from writer’s block, and the only cure is an impromptu trip to Paris. And so, comedy writer Jonas Lenner flees the suffocating monotony of home. Jonas tells his wife that he is going to visit head teacher Mikkelsen, an old – and fictitious – friend in Springfield. But of course she learns the truth yet says nothing. Orphan Pip discovers through lawyer Mr. Jaggers that a mysterious benefactor wishes to ensure that he becomes a gentleman. The infant Japhet Newman is left on the steps of the orphanage. He grows up here and becomes a strong and cheerful lad who – together with his friend Tim – decides to go out into the world and find his father. The journey turns out to be unpredictable and full of adventures. They meet the secretive Melchior and join his tribe of gypsies, who roam from town to town. Here they make the acquaintance of Melchior and Queen Nattée’s daughter Fleta, and Japhet quickly becomes her faithful friend and protector. Director Jessen lives with his sons Fritz and Jørgen in a country house on the coast of Øresund. One day, Jessen announces that his boss is coming to visit from Australia, and that he will bring along his daughter, Alice. Jessen further proclaims that he wants one of his sons to marry Alice. Full of prejudice against Australians, Fritz and Jørgen end up drawing lots to determine who must accept this terrible fate. Upon arriving in Denmark, Alice decides to send her friend Elsie ahead to the country house to take the measure of the two fellows and report back to her. She pretends to be Alice, and to complicate things further, Fritz and Jørgen have in the meantime hired two strange vagabonds, Pat and Patachon, to pretend to be them, hoping that this will make her turn around and leave immediately. The merchant Blomberg is out in the countryside with his daughters and housekeeper when the idyll is suddenly shattered. The daughters head off to have fun with two young guys from Copenhagen who are on a road trip, and the vagabonds Pat and Patachon seize the chance to interfere for their own gain. The preserved material is the original Swedish version titled 'Landsvägsriddare', translated to 'Tyvepak' in Danish. The film was a huge economic success to the then Swedish owned production company Palladium. It is the first film, in which Pat and Patachon appear as a team, although not in their final constellation: As always, Pat is played by Carl Schenstrøm, whereas Patachon is embodied by Aage Bendixen instead of Harald Madsen. There is another 'Tyvepak' from 1915, which is directed by Lau Lauritzen Sr. as well. This film is a heavily revised version of the 1915-film. (stumfilm.dk)
