19th century. Russia, one of the biggest and most powerful empires in the world is fighting a bloody war to subjugate the free peoples of the Caucasus. In 1828 Caucasian Imamate was established in order to unite Caucasian peoples against Russia under the banner of Islam. By 1834 the situation is dire. Ghazi-Muhammad, the leader of the Imamate, gets killed in an ambush by the Russian forces. One of his loyal warriors, Shamil, barely escapes alive. The fight must continue, but the future is uncertain.

The film takes place in one of Dagestani villages. It tells the story of Murad and Maisarat, two teenagers, who fall in love with each other. Their love can't exist though, in a conservative environment of Dagestani customs, because Maisarat was betrothed to another boy, and the couple can't go against the will of parents.

After Asiat refuses to marry a much older rich man to whom she was betrothed since childhood, her father kicks her out of the house. She leaves for Makhachkala to study and falls in love with the young Yusup.
