14-year-old David could one day become a judo champion - if it wasn't for his explosive temper and aggression, which he finds hard to control. And this is the only legacy he received from his violent father, currently serving time in prison. David tries to live up to his mother's expectations while taking care of his 9- year-old brother. He gets a chance to change his life when he is invited to an important judo tournament.

Set in the near present, captures a nation on the brink of war. Due to the unstable political situation, Dawid loses his job without a warning. As his family prepares to flee the country, Dawid’s younger brother becomes involved with the only organization willing to stand against the encroaching enemy.

The film tells the story of two Highlander brothers – Maciek and Andrzej. After the death of their father, which Andrzej contributed to, and the loss of his beloved Bronka, Andrzej leaves the family home. On his way, he meets the mysterious Wolfram, an anthropologist and climber. He shares with him his mountaineering technique and knowledge about the Prague origins of the highlanders. Andrzej returns to Zakopane, war breaks out. To protect the Highlanders from wartime destruction, he wants to persuade them to cooperate with the Germans. Andrzej and Maciek are standing on opposite sides of the barricade. The brothers' confrontation is bloody and painful.
