This is a series of intersecting stories. A petty crook and former lover of a lazy ingénue steals the box-office receipts from the Odeon of Herodus Atticus, on the day an important football game is also taking place. There is also the story of the half-mad mother of the ingénue who refuses to put shoes on because she believes that shoes lead people astray. An eccentric grave-digger produces a two-seater coffin for couple-victims of car accidents. The film also tells the story of one of the Odeon's cleaning women and of a watermelon that goes all around the city, pursued by a tired theater technician and his sister, who is a tour guide. The impresario conducts an inquiry after the theft, but the thief and his two associates, the ingénue and the technician, use what was stolen to set up a small theatre. Small everyday stories and comic incidents combine to create a portrait of modern-day Athens.

Yannis meets and falls in love with the leading actress of a play, Emma. She convinces him to propose one of his plays to the theater director. The director agrees to stage it, but in a more commercial version. Yannis feels guilty because he has allowed his play to be compromised and ruined. Soon, his relationship with the actress will be shaken by the weight of their character differences. He will eventually leave Emma, shortly before the play's premiere.

We are in 1942, in the middle of the German Occupation, on an island opposite the coast of Asia Minor, where a mature woman, Katerina Rodeli, cares for a wounded resistance fighter named Kanaris. Greek-American Peter Papas, vacationing with his wife in Greece, crashes into a taxi driver and discovers that the driver is his old friend Meletis, who is married and the father of six children. Twenty-five years ago, they were both assistants to a puppeteer, Stamatis Tranos, who believed that the art of Shadow Theatre was in decline, due to cinema. In addition, his young wife, Marika, left him to follow a young man, taking their daughter Lisa with her. Peter and Meletis search for Mr. Stamatis, who is now a mental wreck, has become a drunkard and wanders around entertaining young children.

However, the next day finds the thief being pursued by the authorities and arrested. Before that, their true identities are revealed.
