Set in the Soviet Union, the film is a chronicle of a life of one successful artist: his family, his friends, his clients, and his artworks.

One night, the famous robber Merzavio comes to the house of archivist Jiří Havříček, the most educated man in town. Merzavio asks the archivist to become a teacher for ten years for his two hooligan sons Vincek and Frantik.

In the second part, after reading Don Quixote, the ever-adventurous Vasechkin convinces more cautious Petrov that he has found a game that they could play for life.
