Jean-Yves Machond, a globally unknown and generally unhappy painter, decides one day to change his life. He seeks inspiration in a small Norman town, in order to design a masterpiece that will finally earn him glory and eternal recognition. But his meeting with local artists, from the warm Bagnoule to the skillful Cécile, will somewhat make him deviate from his path, and bring him face to face with his deepest dream: that of simply being a happy man.

After graduating from high school, Julien left his hometown to build a bigger life in the capital, leaving his memories behind. And then one day, he had to come back, and that day his memories jumped out at him from between two packets of Pépito cookies.

Simultaneously, a retired couple overwhelmed by debt tries to win a dance contest, as the minister of economy is suspected of tax evasion, and a teenage girl encounters a sexual maniac, while a young lawyer attempts to climb the social ladder. A forest full of animated animals encourage a pair of snails, who are fully clad in black because they are in mourning for a dead leaf, to celebrate the new spring and reclaim the colors of life. Based on the children's poem by Jacques Prévert entitled "Chanson des escargots qui font à l'enterrement" ("Song of the snails who are on their way to a funeral").

Auguste Lumière directs four workers in the demolition of an old wall at the Lumière factory. One worker is pressing the wall inwards with a jackscrew, while another is pushing it with a pick. When the wall hits the ground, a cloud of white dust whirls up. Three workers continue the demolition of the wall with picks.
