A modern adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, set in contemporary Helsinki. Raskolnikov, a struggling law student, commits a brutal murder, believing himself above the law. As guilt and paranoia consume him, he spirals into a mental and moral crisis, all while the relentless lead investigator closes in on him.

In his youth, the author Frej has already found a deep connection and passion with an upper-class girl, Stella Rabell, that has lasted between them through the decades. When Stella's older brother Alex falls victim to a stabbing attack, Frej begins to reminisce about the events of decades past. Frej's memories from the bright 1970s to the present day are filled with love, jealousy, betrayal, life and death.

On her way home at night a young woman meets her ex and a burst of mixed emotions take over and the devil comes to visit.

In 1944, at the tail end of the war—in which Finland aligned with Germany for a time in a bid to fight off an invasion by the Soviet Union, before reaching a peace deal with the latter which involved kicking German troops out—soldiers Heikki and Pauli take their first steps toward adulthood in the unforgiving expanse of the Arctic Circle, and interpreter Saara Vainio leaves her husband for German officer Duisberg, defying both convention and country. When news of Finland’s armistice with the Soviet Union reaches the front lines, everything changes: Heikki and Pauli are forced to turn their weapons on those they once fought alongside, and Saara and other women must choose between love and loyalty.
