Story of a student in the town of Trieste, shaken up by the economic crisis.

Mario and Filippo are two twin brothers, the honorable one want to bring morality back into Italian political life, as president of the Commission for the investigation of corruption. The other brother is a cynical trickster.

Silvio refuses to fight for the fascists and joins the resistance with Elena. After the war, his vitriolic newspaper articles cause him to be sentenced to imprisonment.
