Forensic doctor Qing Ling travels to Sheung Shui village to look into and investigate the true events behind her brother's disappearance. The villagers are living in mortal fear of the curse of a creature known as the Water Monkey.

The film is a true re-creation of the fifty-sixth century, when the new China was in a state of complete disarray and the country was embarking on a vigorous socialist rural co-operative movement. The young writer Liu Qing resigned from his cadre position in Beijing and was determined to take part in the process himself, creating an epic work that reflected the collective enterprise of the socialist people. He spent fourteen years on the front line of rural construction, and in the face of various movements and difficulties in building agricultural co-operatives, he took up the cause with the peasants and opened up a new situation for the socialist cause in the countryside, creating the first part of The History of Entrepreneurship, which was a national sensation when it was published.

On May 22, 1949, Communist agent Kou Xuewen and his comrades broke into the Kuomintang Qianshan Defense Command and successfully launched an armed uprising, captured the Fengxiang's garrison commander-in-chief.

Shui Sheng witnessed his father being killed by the "water monkey" monster when he was young. Ten years later, the water monster reappeared and killed the younger brother and father of the heroine Xiang Lan. In order to save her, Shui Sheng launched a fierce battle to break feudal superstitions and to catch the water monster.

A seven-year-old boy is sent to the countryside to be with his grandfather Li Fuchang. By pure chance, the old man finds out where an old friend is, whose days are numbered. He then decides to travel with his motorized tricycle to visit him, taking the child with him.
