When a massive alien flower known as "Darol" unexpectedly erupts in a deadly event, unleashing monstrous creatures that decimate the population of Japan, Rita is caught in the destruction—and killed. It is the year 1988. Yamabuki is an eight-year-old little boy growing up in a traditional family where every family member has problems and secrets they try to hide from each other. The father runs a failing construction company and has an intimate relationship with another woman. The mother is struggling with severe depression, as she cannot cope with the death of her youngest child. The grandfather, who used to be a construction engineer, hopes to start building an amusement park, but to no avail. The grandmother runs a small store where she sells items of forged origin. The sister is fed up with the lies of her predecessors and is looking for a way to run away from home. In the midst of all this chaos, Yamabuki has started to find solace in patting an imaginary dog.

Kyo Otsuka is a shy high school student with zero confidence but he has feelings for Naoko Miki, the most popular girl in his class. Instead of putting himself forward, he watches her from afar as she hangs out with her energetic friends. This includes Hirofumi, Miki’s childhood friend and Kyo’s friend. Hirofumi is handsome and athletic and has a nice personality. When another shy student stops going to school, the feelings of everyone begin to change.

Satomi Oka is worried about his final choir competition but is accosted by a shadowy gangster, Kyouji Narita, who demands karaoke sessions with him.

On actor Yoshiaki's birthday, a group of friends gather. They lead different lives, but understand each other and have a good relationship with each other. On the way home, one of the friends receives some bad news?
