Milly Cohen lives in modest circumstances with her grandmother Cathy and her little brother Kevin. After the death of her parents, she gave up her art studies and works for the antiques dealer Philip Barnes, a handsome but uncouth bachelor. Philip only realizes that Milly has become the pearl of the store when she quits - due to her boss's unfriendliness and her brother's serious illness. Philip doesn't get on well with the new assistants. He realizes that he has fallen in love with Milly. When he tries to win her back, Milly has already accepted her old boyfriend's proposal of marriage.

Master Eder's cousin Ferdinand turns up one day after his death to collect his inheritance. What he doesn't realize is that Pumuckl is also part of his legacy. But Polt knows that the dead man was hated in the community. He suspects that the murderer wanted to make the death look like an accident. Many of the winegrowers had a motive. After a long investigation in the wine cellars, he discovers that all the cellars are connected by holes. Polt doesn't want to leave the feeling that it was a murder. As he drinks some wine with his friends, they all confess to the crime. They had all poisoned Albert Hahn with the fermentation gas together, but only one of them wants to take all the blame, as the rest have children and wives. He commits suicide and leaves a confession behind.
