An emotional journey back to the 50s and 60s: Through photos and film footage from her childhood, the 48-year-old filmmaker Marie remembers growing up in bourgeois post-war Germany. Marie is once again confronted with the early death of her mother and the excessive demands of her conservative father. He has no understanding for her and deports her to a Catholic girls' boarding school. A youth characterized by constant rebellion against the mustiness of the post-war years and against a society that expects one thing above all from girls: to smile nicely into the camera and under no circumstances direct the film themselves!

To find out the truth about her sister's death, lawyer Julia returns to her home village in the foothills of the Alps, where the gruesome murder took place eight years ago. A mysterious email she receives opens up old wounds and makes her doubt whether the police convicted the right person back then. Step by step, she delves deeper into a web of lies and half-truths, putting herself in danger in the process. Julia wants to confront the past and find her sister's real murderer. She seeks contact with Inspector Maurer, who once led the investigation. The taciturn investigator is now suspended from duty and seems to know more than he is letting on. The behavior of psychologist Lisa Poldack, who has been treating the recently deceased perpetrator since his confession, is also puzzling.

Carlos Benede is in his thirties, single and helps minors cope with the after-effects of crime. Alexander is a strong-willed and precocious eleven-year-old, who witnesses the horrific death of his mother by his own father. Benede mentors Alexander and the two develop a bond. An unconventional counselor from the youth welfare office learns of Alexander’s trust in Benede, who himself grew up in a home, and reunites the two. Although not always easy, the relationship grows and deepens into one of father and son.

In 1964, young Julia Welling is sent to Bavaria to create and manage a home for children. For the past of her father (a member of the Nazi party) Julia now defends the values of democracy and wants children to be treated like whole persons. Her first days in Bavaria are difficult because the people are very conservative: when she notices some parents beating their children, she steps in and they don't understand her intervention. She meets a young American officer who is organizing the end of US occupation forces in Germany; he helps her get a former military installator for her new children's home. She manages to install the home and begin her activities, but one night a violent farmer tries to burn down the building because she has protected his son.
