After a failed Interpol operation, Tom Fährmann, human rights activist and escape agent, is tasked with finding Sofia Moreno, a whistleblower who has disappeared in Lisbon, and bringing her to a safe house on the Portuguese coast. When Fährmann realizes that Sofia's eight-year-old son Noa is in the hands of a hacker organization that the programmer wanted to fight with her filter program against fake news, his assignment turns into a rescue mission in which Fährmann can no longer trust anyone.

A parcel carrier who has nothing to do with Christmas accidentally crosses paths with a petty thief and a mysterious little boy who doesn't speak. Nelly is stunned when Filou Sonny steals two bottles of whiskey and a vintage car from the petrol station where she has a second job. Nick, who suddenly appears between the shelves and doesn't say a word, distracts Nelly during the theft. Since she has to assume that Nick is Sonny's accomplice, she grabs the boy and takes him with her on the chase, receiving support from the elderly cab driver Gesine, who had just filled up her car at the gas station. When Nelly discovers the stolen vintage car by chance outside a villa, she sends Gesine back and asks her to look after the filling station while she is away.

However, the fact that the killer left a music box with the lullaby "Hush Little Baby" at the crime scene does not lead to a clear solving. 25 years later, the investigative journalist Stefanie Schneider, known as "Mütze", made a surprising discovery in Cologne. In a disused multi-storey car park, she films an undressed corpse of a man with a music box running next to it! When her colleague Jan Römer, who reported on the spectacular Sonja case as a young journalist in 1995, recognizes the melody from back then, he immediately believes there is a connection. He goes to Wilzenberg with his ambitious colleague to interview Sonja's mother Maria, her former teacher Waldheim and her best friends. The more the journalists compile, the clearer the contradictions and gaps that the investigators should have noticed at the time.
