Anna and her lodger, Mr. Kurtz, have come to terms with each other in their shared flat. But both Mr. Kurtz's planned conversion of the cosy four walls into a smart home and Anna's feelings for a new acquaintance shake up their life together.

Fun-loving Anna and her brittle lodger Mr. Kurtz are already living under the same roof as an old married couple. The balance of opposites threatens to tip when Anna's helper syndrome kicks in twice. Her friend Gundi, who has injured her knee, needs help with her everyday life and a barrier-free home, but she can hardly afford a new apartment on her meagre pension. Anna's ex Willi needs a place to stay even more urgently. Soon there is the danger of a senior citizens' flat share.

Only the others have fun: In the Hamburg social drama, a teenager experiences the cold side of the neighbourhood. Hunger drives Leon (Albert Lichtenstern) onto the street. His mother has once again not taken care of him and is somewhere. To get money and food, the 15-year-old steals everything that is not nailed down. He finds small odd jobs in the run-down "Palaise Cherie" brothel, which has become a place to go for him. His fatherly friend Klaus (Detlev Dorendorf), the "Koberer", sits on his stool day and night and tries to guide passers-by into the shop. And then there is a prostitute to whom Leon feels attracted. As always, the boy somehow gets through the day - but this time he has to realise that his mother is not coming back to him.

Eifel landlady Toni Janssen wants a child, but not necessarily a man. After an alcohol-fueled slip, her ex-boyfriend Hajü, of all people, gets her hopes up. Meanwhile, Heidi accidentally meets an old childhood friend.

The ambitious scientist Franz Walter doesn't hesitate when he is promised a professorship at the university. He immediately accepts, pledges absolute loyalty to the system and agrees to work for the GDR's foreign intelligence service until he can take up his new position. Together with his colleague Dirk, he is sent on foreign assignments to West Germany. Franz soon has to use blackmail to get innocent people to talk. But his superiors go even further: GDR refugees and their relatives are targeted to be psychologically destroyed, forged letters, medical diagnoses, surveillance and wiretapping are on the agenda. However, this is more than Franz can bear: he feels powerless and increasingly isolates himself. When he then decides to steal secret documents for a later defection to the West, this results in an unfortunate chain reaction leading to his arrest and ultimately to his execution...

A story about male hubris, repressed feelings, unconscious depression and the hard struggle for success in a capitalist world where fragility has no place.

In the middle of the Schaalsee runs the bureaucratically precisely defined "fluid border" between the FRG and GDR. One night a storm shifts a buoy of the border line. While the border and measuring troops from East and West meticulously try to restore order, two land surveyors throw their prejudices overboard and tear down the border between them for a short time.
