
Lya De Putti, born Amália Putti, was an Hungarian film actress of the silent era, noted for her portrayal of vamp characters. She began her stage career on the Hungarian Vaudeville circuit. She soon progressed to Berlin, where after performing in the ballet, she made her screen debut in 1918. During her short film career, 1918 - 1929, she appears in 35 feature films.

A man betrays his best friend, a member of a terrorist organisation, to the authorities and is then pursued by the other members of the organisation.

The film follows Lya, a woman seeking refuge from Cossack soldiers, who finds herself at the palace of Prince Nicholas. She becomes his majordomo and they fall in love, but their relationship is disrupted when Nicholas learns of her past with a Bolshevik leader. Lya is expelled, becomes a terrorist, and later encounters Nicholas again, now disguised as a servant. When Nicholas is sentenced to death, she rescues him and they escape together.

Midnight Rose, a dancer in the Gold Coast Cabaret, loves Tim Regan, an underworld gang leader who decides to go straight in spite of entreaties from other gang members. A dying gangster requests that Tim adopt his 4-year-old son, Sonny; and realizing that the boy needs a mother, Tim induces Rose to marry him. She soon tires of housework, grows jealous of Tim's fondness for Sonny, and consequently returns to the cabaret, where Corbin, her former suitor, rehires her. Pvt. Smith, an American soldier stationed in a German town during the occupation of Germany after World War I, falls in love with the daughter of the town's leading citizen. The problem is that his sworn enemy, Sgt. Butts, also has designs on the girl. Butts comes up with a plan to get rid of his competition and get the girl for himself, but things don't go quite the way he planned.

Geoffrey is desperately in love with Mavis, who lives at his boardinghouse and is also pursuing a writing career. Unable to marry her because of his poverty, in his anger he curses God for abandoning him. Soon Geoffrey meets Prince Lucio de Rimanez, a wealthy, urbane gentleman who informs Geoffrey that he has inherited a fortune, but that he must place himself in the Prince's hands in order to enjoy the fruits of his inheritance. What Geoffrey doesn't know is that Prince Lucio is actually Satan.
