Forty-year-old Gianni Orzan is satisfied with the life he has built for himself. He lives with his wife Anna, a very sweet woman, and their son Francesco. An encounter with a strange stranger who claims to know things about his father, a fascist soldier, throws Gianni's equilibrium into crisis, forcing him to make a lucid analysis of who he is and who he would have liked to become.

A young lawyer returns home and discovers that a man has committed suicide jumping through a window of his house. His wife, Maria, says that she let the unknown man enter because he said the lawyer was the only one who could help him. Bernardo start to investigate about the man and about the reasons of his suicide.

Davide Camporesi is the owner of the "Tornerai" pension in Cesenatico which he manages together with his wife Elvira and daughter Carletta, and which mainly welcomes German tourists. One day, during a trip to the countryside to buy wine, Davide meets Vindice Forattini, a former partisan comrade whom he had not seen for 30 years and who now sells agricultural feed together with his attractive daughter Cesarina. During the meeting, Davide is deeply impressed by Cesarina, and invites her to stay at the family pension. But things soon get out of hand to Davide, who finds himself romantically involved.

In the city of Ostuni in Puglia, the mute seminarian Ercole is designated to be the driver and nurse of Parsifal, the paraplegic son in a rich and sanctimonious family of landowners. Ercole soon becomes the lover of his master's wife, the beautiful Baroness Clotilde. In a familial and social context where only money, sex and power count, everyone tries to take advantage of everyone, but the real saprophyte turns out to be Ercole.
