To mark the 60 years since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The film is set in a small village in western Russia. It is a story about two days from the life of an ordinary family: a father, a mother and their five-year-old daughter. That’s what Garik Sukachyov says about his film: “On June 22, 1941, a family is celebrating the daughter’s birthday. It is a beautiful sunny day, full of joy and merriment. For the girl, it is filled with important events and adventure – her birthday is celebrated by the whole village, not just by her family. And no one yet knows that tomorrow her father will leave for his work in a district center and come back a few hours later in a home guard uniform only to say goodbye to his family. And that at the moment of their leave-taking the Germans already will be entering the village. And that they will be shot by the river, on the same bank where only yesterday the carefree, happy family was sunbathing and having fun…”

Striking workers with their wives and children gathered in front of the governor's house. The crowd is noisy, they are trying to rip off the governor's shoulder straps, his assistants have difficulty pulling him out of the crowd and taking him into the house. Stones are flying through the windows. The governor goes out onto the balcony and takes out a handkerchief. The soldiers standing in the cordon are nervous, and a careless wave of the governor’s handkerchief is interpreted as an order to open fire. As a result, 47 people die. The governor, as a true patriot, cannot fight against his people. And having become, willingly or unwillingly, the culprit of the death of people, he awaits inevitable retribution for this.

1928. Winter. Unprecedented construction of a giant plant Uralmash is getting under way. Rushing time of first five-year plans, incredible enthusiasm, inconceivable raging imagination, and also sabotages, provocation, suspiciousness, denunciation, famine and unsettled domestic life. And people of that time are the same, straight-out, resolute, goal-oriented, and moving towards the aim regardless of their own health. So is a main character a new head of the plant, a former Red Army cavalryman Alexander Bannikov (V.Gaev). He leads construction works as if he is marches into battle. It is exactly the kind of people of whom people say he lives for his work, and how one cant live for his work if at the height of the construction Moscow sends an order to stop it short.
