This film is a kind of anthology about Vienna, from the invention of film to the present day. The aim is to break down the usual clichéd "image of Vienna" such as that found in the traditional "Vienna Film" by juxtaposing documentary footage, newly shot material and subjective sequences created by various artists. Individual, self-contained sections of the film gain new meaning within the context of historical material. Familiar sites appear estranged when edited together with historical scenes. Other scenes appear like a persiflage or satirical. The film does not incorporate any commentary whatsoever. It is a collage of diverse materials aimed at conveying a distanced image of Vienna to the viewer

There's only one way for the farmer Assbichler to save his farm from ruin: he has to marry off his son Toni to the pretty Rosl, the daughter of the rich farmer Pius Mang. Mang, however, wants his daughter to marry a well-off man; and so Assbichler has to borrow some cattle to give the farm the appearance of a large farming estate.

Vienna, around 1900. The master baker Streussler’s most ardent wish is to see his daughter Nelly as a student at the university. With the help of his famous “streusel cake” he succeeds in luring all kinds of helpers for this endeavor into his house. But Nelly has entirely different plans: she is in love with the chimney sweep Heinz, the son of a neighbor, with whom Papa Streussler has been fighting for years. So it’s no wonder then, that the grump confectioner is doing everything he can to break up the relationship.

Against the wishes of his adoptive father, Stefan Burgstaller decides to become a musician. He goes to Salzburg, where his girlfriend Veronika is already attending the conservatory. Stefan is also accepted at the school and even receives a scholarship because of his extraordinary talent. This paves the way for a carefree student life, which Stefan enjoys to the fullest. The fun-loving guy is popular everywhere, but he seems to be particularly fond of the slightly older waitress Anna, who works in the musicians' bar "Zur Bassgeige"...

Gretl has been living in Vienna ever since her father, Klaghofer, a small general store owner, tried to marry her off against her will to the wealthy Gruber farmer. Her disgruntled father never opened a single one of her letters. A postcard tells him that Gretl has married—and, he mistakenly assumes, to a rich man. Klaghofer sets out to celebrate the reconciliation. But as soon as he leaves his provincial Austrian hometown and arrives in Vienna, Klaghofer causes utter chaos. In the process, he repairs a troubled marriage and is delighted at the happy ending for everyone involved.
