The Dung Beetle is late, the Parasite is asleep and Mrs Larva is more interested in her knitting than the director’s instructions. It’s clear: this amateur theatre company has a long way to go before they can perform their version of "The Insect Play", a famous satirical work from 1922 by the brothers Karel and Josef Čapek which features insects with decidedly human traits: greed, egocentrism, jealousy.

Outside, conditions change and regimes change, the country is overwhelmed by great history, the whirlwind of the World War, the communist coup, the hopeful spring of 1968, the fraternal occupation, the Hussite normalisation, November 1989 and the collapse of Czechoslovakia. Only those lonely dancers on the dance floor remain the same - with their human longings, their ridiculousness and their unfulfilled dreams.

The ambulance doctor František moves away from his wife Bohuna to his new love Helena. She has been married for several years to the successful writer Karl. However, thanks to her husband's philandering, she was by no means happy in it. It seems that František and Helena are finally waiting for peaceful days and now, on the threshold of fifty, they will finally be able to experience their satisfied love. But in time, Ruth convinces Magda to start behind Adam and try to get him back. However, Magda exploits the situation, acquires Adam for herself and marries him abroad. After years, Magda returns home and the old injustices come to life.

But things start to get complicated at their lavish wedding. The evil fairy Plevelice, in the guise of a beautiful countess, does everything she can to subjugate Jan to her power. His love for Marina fades, and everything is further complicated by war. Marina, who flees the castle to escape her husband's growing anger, gives birth to a boy named Ječmínek. The more she hides with him, the louder the tales of the little heir's goodness and supernatural abilities become. When Jan meets his son, all evil spells disappear, and goodwill and love return to the land of golden fields.
