Elle is a young entrepreneur who wants to lead her grandmother Margot's fashion house into a new era. She is in a relationship with Thilo, the son of an influential Hamburg family. After Elle's grandmother receives anonymous threats, Ben, who has been in prison, is assigned as her bodyguard. Elle is torn between Thilo and Ben. As Elle delves deeper into Ben's world, she learns secrets about Thilo that could jeopardize her grandmother's life's work.

Thomas Brasch was born as a German-Jewish emigrant in England in order to move to the young GDR with his family at the beginning of the 1950s. His father Horst is primarily interested in helping to build the new German state. But Thomas prefers to realize himself as a writer and in doing so discovers his potential as a poetic rebel. His very first play was banned and soon afterwards he lost his place at the film school. When the tanks of the Soviet Union roll through the Czech capital Prague in 1968, Brasch and his girlfriend Sanda and other students try to call for protest in the streets of Berlin - and fail. His own father betrays him to the Stasi and allows Thomas to go to prison. After being paroled, he continues to try his hand at poet writing about love, revolt and death. In the GDR, however, you don't want to have anything to do with someone like him.

Angela Merkel's decision in autumn 2015 to open the borders for refugees split the country - some praised the moral stance, others criticized the surrender of sovereignty. Yet what would appear to be well-planned activity is in reality a policy of muddling along, chance, trial and error. The Driven Ones is a chronicle of the refugee crisis which shows that the political actors are being driven along, crushed between self-imposed constraints and events that have spun out of control.

Germany in the "Swinging Sixties": the Bundeswehr is equipping itself with the ultra-modern "Starfighter" fighter jet. The air force pilots, including the daredevil Harry and his buddy Richie, are the stars of the armed forces. But the fascination with the fastest fighter jet in the world is offset by a dramatic series of accidents: Pilots crash to their deaths in the "Starfighter" one after the other. Officially, the disasters are attributed to human error. But Harry's wife Betti doesn't believe this - and after another serious accident, she takes up the fight against a seemingly overpowering alliance of politics, the military and business, supported by her friend Helga...
