Production of the Vienna State Opera, October 2024. Inspired by a visit to the Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan, director Kirill Serebrennikov brings the plot of Don Carlo into a contemporary context. He was also inspired by this institute for his stage design - after all, original objects from all eras and cultures are kept there and prepared and stored accordingly to protect them from decay.

Fifteen years old Nikita Dzhukov (The Bug)- handsome and clever - he is a leader of the class. There is a newcomer in the class - Senya Ivanov. He's got oncology, but only the principal knows about it. Both Nikita and Senya like Lisa, a girl from their class. The Bug trip on Senya, showing his supremacy. Senya stops appearing in school. He is in hospital, doing chemical therapy. The Bug finds it out. Time passes and Senya comes back to school. He is bold because of the therapy, and he worries about how the classmates will receive him - wan, thin, and, most of all, bold. Senya comes to school, he's wearing a cap. The classmates with The Bug in charge meets him in front of the school. They all are wearing caps. They are standing in front of Senya. Senya is frightened. But the Bug and the rest put off their caps, they are all bold. They are smiling. Senya puts off his cap, smiling in response. They hug each other, laughing joyfully.

The former supervisor of the camp of political prisoners, Barkhatov, turned out to be an ordinary corporal in the war, failed, and did not want to change in the new circumstances and remained a camp "turntable". And during the war, being together with naive village people, he arranged a small "puppet" theater, where he became the main "puppeteer".

Just after the end of the WW II, Kirill Poletayev manages to escape from a train full of prisoners, which gets stuck in a snowdrift. After a strenuous escape through the winter forest, completely frozen and weakened, finally reaches his native village. This situation forces people to take a stand.
