The U.S.S. "Indiana" in action. Filmed by American Mutoscope & Biograph on November 11, 1903 in Glen Island, NY.

Directed by Robert W. Paul.

The short film is just a shot of the Oxford versus Cambridge University Boat Race. However, it is extremely important because, filmed on March 30 1895, it is the earlies film from Great Britain.

"An interesting picture of the great inter-collegiate eight-oared boat race of 1899. The picture is taken from the judge's boat, and shows the start and first part of the race."

This picture, taken from Thorneycroft's Yard, shows the two boats about twelve lenghts apart - a state of things owing to terrible weather in which the race was rowed. It is a very comprehensive view of the contest and a good photograph despite the very trying conditions under which it was produced.

This film was commissioned by influential fairground showman George Green (one of the first exhibitors to hire Mitchell & Kenyon) for his cinematographic show at the Cork International Exhibition 1902. It documents a boat race on a suburban section of the River Lee, though its vantage point also commands a magnificent view of the river and a picturesque Sunday's Well backdrop.

The single camera position was from the point of view of the judge of the course. The films shows a boat race between small, motor-driven speed boats, which were approximately twenty feet long with the inboard engine decked over. Many boats of various designs and spectators can be seen as if the locale were a yacht club basin or yacht mooring.
