Hopscotch is the story of two teenagers leaving their hometown for the first time. They reflect on their childhoods, teenage love, heartbreak, and life on the precipice of the next chapter of their lives. They contemplate the ways they have or have not changed and most importantly, understand what they love about their town and each other before they depart.

Kenji Kanesaka’s Hopscotch was presented as an event at Sogetsu Art Center in 1967, in order to create the sound recording for the film. Participants included filmmakers, musicians, and artists such as Yasunao Tone (composer), Yosuke Yamashita (jazz pianist), Jiro Takamatsu (artist), Shigechika Sato (film critic), Nobuhiko Obayashi (filmmaker), Rikyro Miyai, and others. Tone gave instructions to “hiku" (to play), a Japanese verb with multiple meanings which performers interpreted to play Majong, subtract numbers on a black board, pull the trigger of an air gun, saw a block of wood, draw a bow, etc.

25 years ago, my new book of poems was "Sleepwalking among the Camels". It was a selected book of poems which means that it included a selection from my previous 3 books plus some new poems. It was among these new poems written close to 25 years ago that the poem "Hopscotch" was first presented in print. The poem combines the shape of the game with a difference: words were substituted for the orderly numbers 1-9 producing a short one-line poem, what we call an aphorism, a statement conveying some sort of truth in a direct manner, a statement that can only be made by words not by images, an observation I made in a tweet in 2014. What interested me was the substitution of words for numbers?

The video Hopscotch is a sort of visual essay; on the left of the black screen, in a Polaroid-like framed image, the scrawled figure of spiral, ladder and numbers on London pavements, while on the right a scrolling text describes the antiquity of hopscotch. Hopscotch aims to dissolve the divisions within aesthetics by relating the pavement chalkings with the artist’s drawing and the scientist’s diagram

Outside a stark tent city, this version of the game involves a grid of squares, two across by six long, marked by lines gouged into the arid ground. The player tosses a stone into the grid and starts hopping up one side of it to where the stone lies, careful to land only once in each square or station. When the stone is reached it must be kicked or nudged back down the other side to the start line, still hopping on the same foot. The test is difficult, and few succeed. For as the closing subtitles tell us: ‘In ancient cultures hopscotch symbolizes the progress of the soul from Earth to Heaven. The player hops between Worlds to escape Hell and reach Heaven, from which he will return to Earth reborn and redeemed.’
