Brian, a writer on the verge of a breakdown, is aided by Joe and an Elusive Woman as he sifts through the fragments of his persona to discover his true core. Fighting against fear and the indifference of society - aptly symbolized by the medical establishment - his quest reflects the classical mythos of Proteus and the human search for meaning in the universe.

Despite protests, they gather more and more supporters, thrilled with its explicit sexual language, power games and levels of humiliation.

"With Praxis-1 I began an extensive video series, conceived in a structure of successively numbered scenes, which is parallel to all my other film/video works and paintings. Each part of the Praxis-series is approximately 20 minutes long. Both purely video works and also transformed reflections on a few of my 16mm films are shown after having been put in a new light by means of electronic transformations of the picture." One of Francis Alÿs’ series of performative videos that politicize absurd or seemingly futile gestures, Paradox of Praxis 5 documents the artist’s nocturnal perambulations through Juárez as he kicks a ball of fire along the city’s desolate streets. Transcending metaphor, the eerie mobile conflagration traces out an imaginary map of a devastated city.

I covered my face with Micropore tape, emulating a mask to protect myself from the virus. I was stirring it slowly to find my mouth. Inside my mouth I had hidden my green scarf, a symbol of the feminist struggle in Argentina. I slowly removed if form my mouth and tied it again making a protective mask. The urgent circumstance in which we are inmersed forces us into a collective state of silence. The mask then has a double function: to protect against the virus and to silence. Similarly imposed isolation and enclosure as the only possible defense against the ‘enemy’ works. The vulnerability of women in Argentina has not been modified by isolation. For those in situations of violence, this means to be in constant contact with the real enemy with no way of escape. In this context what is supposed to protect them works against them, and makes the mask worthless. Feminist struggle is then the only way out.

Experimental found footage compilation based on the director's own earlier work.
