Between 1921 and 1927, several significant events unfolded: the Communist Party of China held its First National Congress, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party formed their first collaboration, anti-imperialist and patriotic movements erupted, and the First National Revolution ultimately failed.

A story that details the the lives of ordinary civilians amidst the magnanimous changes in Chinese society over the years. At the end of the 1970s, the Zhou family lived in a provincial city in the north. The father, Zhu Zhi Gang, has just participated in the Third Front Movement in Xi Nan. The eldest son, Zhou Bing Yi, responds to a national call to become part of the first batch of "educated" youths sent to live and work in rural areas. The eldest daughter, Zhou Rong, follows her poet husband to the countryside of Guizhou. The youngest son, Zhou Bing Kun, is the only one left at home with their mother. In the span of 50 years, the Zhou family is swept by the tides of change in China.

In 2003, Lu Changhe, a determined official, is tasked with overseeing the restoration of the Grand Canal in Dongjiang City. He addresses pollution, manages resident relocations, and preserves historical landmarks, ultimately contributing to the canal’s inclusion on the World Heritage List in 2014.

In the winter of 2018, Yongxing Township begins its final push for poverty alleviation as twelve mountain households are relocated. Led by dedicated local officials, the village embraces sustainable development through flower farming, education, and elder care.

After a natural disaster, the Zhao and Liu villages merges together with the help of the village branch secretary Zhao Shuhe, who works to eliminate poverty and heal the grudges between the two villages.

During a turbulent time from 1915 to 1921, Chen Du Xiu and Li Da Zhao, along with other like-minded individuals, founded the Magazine La Jeunesse that started the New Culture Movement. The magazine promoted science and democracy and revolutionized the thinking of the masses and encouraged them to fight against imperialism that has been ingrained in everyone. The series follows a colorful cast with various well-known authors, politicians, and revolutionists as they all try in their own way to save their country.
