Newspaper journalist Shunsuke Akiba is transferred to the cultural desk and put in charge of shogi. He meets Nobushige Sanada, a 33-year-old aiming to be a professional shogi player by achieving the rank of 4-dan or more. Sanada is over the age limit as he could not achieve 4-dan by the age of 26, and is now trying to take an exam for admission to 3-dan. Akiba supports Sanada's attempt to become a professional shogi player and becomes interested in the game.

When Kyoichiro comes home, he hears that his 14-year-old son Kyosuke was stabbed to death. The person who killed Kyosuke turns out to be 13-year-old Mitsuru. The two boys were classmates. Due to Japan's juvenile law, Mitsuru will not receive commensurate punishment for his crime. Kyoichiro points his anger at Mitsuru and his mother Hatsumi, but Kyoichiro sees that Hatsumi also suffers from her son's actions.

Kitagawa Keiko plays Sasaki Rena, a detective who risks her life investigating detectives for her dead sister. Beautiful, intelligent, and with a great memory, the talented woman judges situations and chooses the most appropriate course of action. Her brutal past surrounding her sister's death inspires her to learn everything she can about detectives, leading her to visit the Suma Research Company. At the end of Edo period, Shoji Rui hands over her birthright to her relatives with the death of her father and begins running an inn "Kawasemi" in Ōkawabata. And she settles the matters in their daily lives with her lover Kamibayashi Tōgo, doshin (a sort of constable) Une Genzaburō, physician Amanō Sotarō, and O-Kichi.

Police officer Ohno Makoto discovers a lady covered in blood at Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. Feeling sorry for her, he gives her the temporary name "Koike Shinobu" and lets her live at the tofu shop run by his parents. Even though she has not regained her memory, Makoto is gradually drawn to Shinobu's brave personality. At that time, a mysterious man named Yamane began to appear around Shinobu. Yamane is actually a detective who is pursuing the culprit of a murder that occurred in Nagano. The victim was Shinobu's father, and Shinobu's stepmother has already been arrested, but Yamane is convinced that Shinobu is the real culprit and targets her. Makoto takes Shinobu on a journey to find the real culprit.

Carrying this heavy burden, Toshio fights with the help of Nagai Masayuki (Kanda Masateru), a young newspaper reporter with whom he has a deep connection. However, in the midst of this struggle, an eerie truth about his missing wife's scandalous past and the shadow of a certain man begin to appear like a mirage...
