The main character, Yuzo Jumonji (Tozuka Junki), a struggling actor, has a part-time job at a supermarket, but he can't seem to put any effort into his job, which he doesn't like. One day, when he told his workplace that he wanted to retire to concentrate on his acting career, the chief cashier told him, "You can see the person's life from the contents of the basket." Follow Yuzo as he fantasizes about the lives of the customers from the ingredients in their baskets!

The People's Supermarket is a food cooperative whose stated aim is to provide the local community with good cheap food that's fair to consumers and producers. It was set up in May 2010 by Arthur Potts Dawson, Kate Wickes-Bull, David Barrie and a team of supporters and professional advisors in Lamb's Conduit Street, Holborn, London, England, near Great Ormond Street Hospital. As of February 2012 it had 1000 members. Based upon the concept of the food co-operative and inspired in part by the Park Slope Food Coop in the Park Slope neighbourhood of Brooklyn in New York City, US, members of the social enterprise are required to pay a £25 annual fee and contribute 4 hours of their time every 4 weeks to working in the store. In return, members receive a 20% discount off their shopping in-store. The People's Supermarket was visited by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron on Monday 14 February 2011 immediately prior to his speech relaunching his flagship Big Society initiative and the creation of the Big Society Bank at Somerset House in central London. As of March 2012 the People's Supermarket website had a page headed "Our Imminent Closure" which announced that unless Camden Council continued to support it by allowing the renegotiation of rate payments The People’s Supermarket would become insolvent by 1 March, and asking site visitors to sign a petition. There was a rush of donations which enabled an instalment towards unpaid business rates of about £5,000 to be paid, ending the immediate risk of closure.

Supermarket Superstar is an American reality competition cooking television series that debuted on July 22, 2013, on Lifetime. Produced by Eli Holzman, Rhett Bachner, Michael Chiarello and brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, and hosted by Stacy Keibler. Each show three aspiring food entrepreneurs compete against each other for a chance to win $10,000 in cash as well as $100,000 worth of product development from DINE Marketing and Mattson. The season finale will pit three previous winners against each other competing for a chance to have their products launched and marketed through The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company family of supermarkets. The panel of judges the contestants must face are Debbi Fields of Mrs. Fields Bakeries, Chris Cornyn of DINE, and Chiarello himself. The three contestants each present their product to the mentors in what is called the Product Pitch segment. After getting criticism and advice from the mentors they go into the test kitchen to modify their product taking into consideration price, taste, nutrition and shelf life. They are said to have 90 minutes to make their changes. While in the kitchen, they receive more advice and criticism from Chiarello and Andrew Hunter, one of the country's top research and development experts. The finished product is then given to a small focus group who eat and discuss it with Fields, after which they fill out a survey form. After the comments of the focus group are reviewed, Chirarello announces which dish was rated the highest by the focus group and which contestant is eliminated. The remaining two contestants then work on the marketing details of their product - logo and packaging - with graphic designers from 99designs and mentoring from Cornyn. Then they present their product and design to Tom Dahlen, who is titled an Operating Partner, A&P Supermarkets in a graphic, but otherwise referred to as "the supermarket buyer". Dahlen is joined in his office by the mentors and Keibler who give him a brief opinion and then the contestants return and he announces which contestant he has chosen as the winner. For the finale, Dahlen is joined by A&P President and CEO Sam Martin to pick the winner.

Tripper's Day is a British sitcom produced by Thames Television for ITV, starring Leonard Rossiter as a small London supermarket manager whose best intentions are constantly thwarted by the lazy, useless bunch of bums he employs. The programme is largely remembered for the negative reception, and primarily for the fact that it was Rossiter's final television work, the actor dying between the broadcast of the second and third episodes. The series was revived two years later with Bruce Forsyth in the lead role, under the new title Slinger's Day. In Canada and United States, it was remade as Check it Out!, whilst in Sweden, comical duo Stefan & Krister starred in Full Frys, a TV series largely based on both prior iterations.
